Let Me Show You How to Make the Most of a Tiny Apartment
When you first see your new apartment, you feel excited to move in and make it your home. When you move all your belongings into the apartment, you realize just how small it is and space becomes an issue. Because it’s a rental, you can’t exactly drill into the walls to add shelves or redesign cabinets to increase storage, so what do you do to improve your small apartment storage?
While I will be looking at increasing the storage space in a small apartment, these simple additions and accessories will work well for a small home too. Let’s get straight into improving your apartment storage.
1. Clear the Clutter
When you first hear of clearing the clutter in your apartment, you may think I’m referring to the trash. Clutter can include furniture, clothing, accessories, and items that you no longer use and simply get in the way of living spaces.
My general rule for clutter is to consider whether I have used the item in the last 3 to 4 months. If not, and I have no intention of using it, I usually repurpose it, recycle, or give it away.
2. Your Furniture is too Large for the Small Apartment
This is a popular one! I remember moving in with a dining table and 6 chairs passed down to me from my grandparents. It was large, bulky but made of incredible wood so parting with it was a no-go! If you have good furniture you want to keep, I suggest storing it if you cannot rework it in your apartment.
Whether a sofa, tables, and chairs, or a bed set, first move it around to see whether it can be placed in your new home. If not, then independent storage will help you protect your valuables.
3. Smart Furniture to Maximize Space
Smart furniture is multi-purpose furniture. Why spend more than you have to when multiple styles of furniture can be incorporated to serve different purposes. You can find flat-pack bookshelves to serve as a side table and storage piece or an ottoman as a centerpiece for your living room with extra storage inside the ottoman. It all depends on the clever use and positioning of furniture to help you consume less space while maximizing storage.
4. Hanging Items Instantly Creates Space
You can use shower caddies or hangers, including containers on countertops to get as many belongings off the floor and packed into a neat, organized packing space. This also helps you stay on top of where you’ve placed your valuables!
Happy packing and hanging!
